Environmental Course Listing

Welcome to the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism’s list of more than 600 environmental courses at Michigan State University. This list includes both undergraduate and graduate courses. The classes are listed alphabetically by subject area.

Within this list are more than 600 courses offered from 14 colleges on campus. In some cases a student must be enrolled in the college to take a course. In other cases, any student can enroll.

This list uses the term “environmental” broadly. Included in it are courses dealing with biology, chemistry, environmental economics, environmental engineering, food science, forestry, geology, history, women’s studies and many other subjects. Students who wish to be successful environmental journalists should have a broad knowledge of many different areas.

The university requires undergraduate students to take four 300 or 400 level courses to meet the requirement for an external specialty. This database will help students find the correct prerequisites for their 300 and 400 level courses.

Included in the list is information about which semester the course is offered, a class description, requirements to take the course, credits, special restrictions and the department offering the course. To find out who is teaching the course, the exact time it is offered and additional information, please contact the academic advisor for the college.

The best way to find out the name of the academic advisor is to go to the MSU Schedule of courses. The URL for this web page is: http://ntweb8.ais.msu.edu/ScheduleBook/schedule.asp. This link will take you directly to the course scheduler. This tool is also useful for preplanning semester courses. The best way to utilize this tool is first to find the semester selection tool. Select the semester you want to take the course. After you find the course in the drop down list of departments, you will be given a list of all the classes offered by that department. Students can also select a course by typing in the department and course number. This will only display the section and the class. In the class display in the right hand corner above the first class should be contact information for that department.

The database will be most valuable, if you work with your advisor. (Please be aware that course offerings change and some classes may not be offered anymore.)

If you are enrolled in the journalism school, please contact Nancy Ehret. She can be reached at in room 181 of the Communication Arts Building. Her telephone number is 517-355-1794; her fax number is 517-355-3346 and her e-mail address is ehret@msu.edu .
