The Meeman Archive is the nation's best collection of environmental reporting in newspapers. The collection, recently donated by officials at the University of Michigan is now housed by the Environmental Journalism Program at Michigan State University. It is part of a growing collection of resources in environmental journalism, which includes books, audiotapes, videotapes and other materials. The Meeman Archive consists of entries for the Edward J. Meeman Award, sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards. The Edward J. Meeman Awards are given to encourage newspapermen and newspaperwomen to help educate the public and public officials to a better understanding and support of conservation. The awards are named for the late Edward J. Meeman, former editor of the Memphis Press-Scimitar and conservation editor of Scripps Howard Newspapers. Many entries of the Thomas L. Stokes Award are also stored in the Meeman Archive. The Environmental Journalism Program is currently working with the MSU library to create a searchable database that will enable researchers, students and journalists to find articles on specialized topics. If you would like to contribute articles, books or other materials to the MSU Meeman Archive, please contact Jim Detjen by email or by phone at 517/353-9479. Contributions to MSU's Environmental Journalism Program are tax deductible. So, rather than tossing away valuable artifacts of environmental reporting, please consider sending them to us. We will do our very best to preserve and safeguard them for the future benefit of students, scholars and historians. |
